"The Children's of Nepal Right to Knowledge" - Le Droit de Savoir des Enfants du Népal
For English Speakers
Our association, "Le Droit de Savoir des Enfants du Népal” or « The Children’s of Nepal Right to Knowledge» was founded in late 2009 by Olivier Brunet a French citizen with a particular passion for Nepal as a country and its people.
The association helps with the schooling for children of “Lapcha”, a very poor mountain village in the Nepal Everest region. This village is isolated, one needs a full day by car and three days walk to go from Kathmandu, the capital city, to the Lapcha village.
At Lapcha’s mixed school, there are 100 students from 3 years to 16 years. 11 teachers whose salaries are paid by the association. Children learn reading, writing, math and English language. They proudly wear their school uniform that the association renews regularly, as the school is not heated the association also financed some warm clothing so that kids can stay focused on the studying (as per the idea of Pasang our Nepalese correspondent from the village).
Every two years the association members would pay with their own money, and travel to Lapcha, to meet the children and see our actions there. All funds raised by the association through various sporting activities in France serve to help the Lapcha village. There is no risk of corruption through a complete transparency in budget and money spent through-out the village community and association members: all teachers and residents of Lapcha know the budget allocated each year, how it is spent and share their needs for the following year.
The living conditions in this part of the Everest mountain are very hard : Out of the 150 houses in the village only 70 have access to electricity (for lighting only) because the cost of 0.70 Euro per month is too high for the population with no fixed income. There is no heating in the houses, no running water. Despite their poverty, they are generous and gracious beings always smiling.
All the association members are volunteers and are attached to the following principles and values:
- A rigorous management of raised funds
- A draconian restriction of operating costs
- Ongoing consultation with the volunteer members for complete transparency
- All travel and accommodation costs are entirely borne by the members, who come to Nepal
This site, in French mostly (apologies for our English speaking readers) will be updated regularly to present our activities, and the results of the funds raised through your donations to the children of Lapcha. Feel free to send us your comments and ideas, so that we can make progress in our actions. We wish you a good visit.
